Biography

I grew up in the small towns and smalls cities of central Alberta, Canada. As a very young man I attended the very young Red Deer College, got enmeshed in campus politics and poetry, and published my first book. Then I was off to the University of Lethbridge, where they had a thing called Colloquium Studies that allowed me to design my own learning program.

With the guidance of Marty Oordt and Bill Latta, I did just that, spending about equal time drinking, reading and writing poetry. After a couple of years of that, they gave me a B.A.. Need I say that, in these more conservative times, Colloquium Studies is no more?

A few years later, desperate to improve my earning power (power is the wrong word here), I completed a Masters in Communication Studies at the University of Calgary. I managed to parlay that into a teaching position back at RDC, then branched out with my communications consulting company, Grandview Consulting Inc..

My wife Sandi and I have three adult children. Here’s a nice profile of my community involvement published in the Red Deer Advocate in 2008. And more recently, Red Deer Living magazine profiled rethink red deer, the citizens' group I founded.

In recent years, I have managed to crawl beyond the Canadian west, spending time in Spain, Mexico and Costa Rica. And hope to continue doing so from my home base in Victoria BC.
